Hello R.A. The Rugged Man! I would like to start the interview by asking how did the remix of Legendary Losers with our own DJ Fastcut come to life.
«Beatstars had hundreds of producers submitting remixes. I thought it was a great competition full of talent. DJ Fastcut had a fun vibe that fit the song very well»
Ciao R.A. The Rugged Man! Questa volta iniziamo l’intervista chiedendoti com’è nato il remix di Legendary Losers insieme al nostro DJ Fastcut.
«Beatstars ha ricevuto migliaia di remix da migliaia di produttori. Ho pensato che fosse una bella competizione piena di talento. DJ Fastcut aveva una vibe divertente che era perfetta per la canzone»
And what do you think of Italy? Are you proud of your Italian origins?
«I love Italy. I’m hoping to do an Italian tour all over the country if we can make it happen. My grandmother was Josephine Orlando from Sicily and I have never been to Sicily»
E cosa ne pensi dell’Italia? Sei fiero delle tue origini italiane?
«Amo l’Italia. Spero di poter fare un tour in tutta la penisola se sarà possibile. Mia nonna si chiamava Josephine Orlando ed era siciliana, io non sono mai stato in Sicilia»
Talking about the beginning of your career, you started signing a contract with a label in the 90s, but then you went indipendent. What led you to this decision?
«I only loved music and once I got in the business I hated it so much it almost made me hate music as well. I had to distance myself from the nasty ugly people in the business and concentrate on myself and my own art»
Parlando degli inizi della tua carriera, tu all’inizio avevi un contratto con un’etichetta discografica negli anni 90, ma poi sei diventato indipendente. Cosa ti ha spinto verso questa decisione?
«Io amavo fare musica ma non appena sono entrato nel business l’ho odiato così tanto che mi ha quasi fatto odiare la stessa musica che amavo. Dovevo quindi prendere le distanze da tutte le persone negative presenti nel business e concentrarmi su di me e sulla mia arte»
Notorious B.I.G. once said while listening to your music: “And I thought I was the illest”. What do you think of this big shoutout from the legend?
«Biggie was my peer and my friend. I looked at him as all my peers who I respected, but there are so many legends and greats who aren’t even mentioned anymore, some are gone and some are still with us. It’s crazy to think Biggie has been gone longer than he was able to live»
Notorious B.I.G. una volta disse ascoltando la tua musica: “E io credevo di essere il più pazzo al microfono”. Cosa ne pensi di questo complimento da parte della leggenda?
«Biggie era un mio collega e amico. La mia opinione nei suoi confronti era la stessa che avevo per tutti i colleghi che rispettavo, ci sono tantissime leggende e grandi rappers che non sono più citati, alcuni sono morti e altri vivono ancora. È assurdo pensare che Biggie sia scomparso da più anni di quanti sia effettivamente riuscito a vivere»
Your music is full of movie references, what are your favorite ones? And the ones that inspired you the most to write lyrics?
«Arguably the greatest movie ever made was actually an Italian film directed by Federico Fellini called La Dolce Vita, that film influenced me a lot. All of my film influences are not just the straight forward mainstream filmmakers, but the legendary maniacs like Frank Henenlotter and David Cronenberg as well»
La tua musica è piena di riferimenti cinematografici: quali sono i tuoi film preferiti? E quelli che hanno ispirato maggiormente le tue liriche?
«Probabilmente il migliore film mai fatto era proprio un film italiano diretto da Federico Fellini e intitolato La Dolce Vita, quel film è stata una mia grande influenza. Tutti i cineasti che mi hanno ispirato non sono solo quelli più conosciuti dal grande pubblico, ma anche maniaci leggendari di quell’arte come Frank Henenlotter e David Cronenberg»
You usually publish an album after a quite big gap from the previous one. Did you ever witness the writer’s block? Are there any topics you find hard writing about?
«No, writing raps for me is easy, I can write a million songs in my sleep. It’s just the business side of putting them out and promoting them, pushing them and and getting them to make some noise with no real marketing budget that’s a lot of work»
Tu solitamente pubblichi un album dopo un intervallo di tempo abbastanza grande rispetto al precedente. Hai mai avuto il blocco dello scrittore? Ci sono degli argomenti di cui trovi difficile scrivere?
«No, per me è facile scrivere testi rap, potrei scrivere un milione di canzoni nel sonno.Il vero duro lavoro è quello appartenente al lato del business musicale, ovvero pubblicarle, promuoverle e far sì che facciano chiasso senza un vero e proprio budget di marketing»
What’s your top 5 rappers?
«I love Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap, Chuck D, KRS One, but I have 20 other MCs I can put on my top 5 on any given day. So many legends in history»

«Adoro Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap, Chuck D, KRS One, ma avrei altri 20 MCs che metterei nella mia top 5 in qualunque momento. Ci sono così tante leggende nella storia del rap»
You’re going to perform in Ravenna! What can Italian fans expect from a concert of yours?
«I’m going to give a high level of energy and crowd excitement and tear the roof off the building!»
Presto ti esibirai a Ravenna! Cosa possono aspettarsi i fan italiani da un tuo concerto?
«Darò un alto livello di energia ed eccitazione al pubblico, cercherò di far saltare il tetto dell’UnderFest8!»
What are your future projects?
«I haven’t decided yet if I want to release an album or direct a movie first»

«Non ho ancora deciso se rilasciare un nuovo album oppure dirigere un mio film prima»
