Il giovane Marqus Clae – protagonista di questa intervista – fa parte del movimentato panorama texano che, negli ultimi anni, ha lanciato le carriere di artisti oramai noti a livello mondiale. La sua onestà ci ha colpito dal momento in cui lo abbiamo sentito per la prima volta.
Il rapper ha mosso i primi passi sotto l’ala della No Limit di Master P, mentre lo scorso anno è stato arruolato dalla Def Jam. Proprio per la celebre etichetta, è da poco uscito The Mecca, il suo ottimo album di debutto. In questa conversazione, abbiamo avuto modo di parlare del disco, delle ispirazioni di Marqus e di tanto altro… buona lettura!

«I am Marqus Clae and I come from Houston. I am grinding, grinding out with music. I have always loved music because it has always been a part of my life.»
«Sono Marqus Clae e vengo da Houston. Sto lavorando sodo con la musica. L’ho sempre amata perché è sempre stata parte integrante della mia vita.»
Talking about your hometown, how did Houston influence your style and music?
Parlando della tua città natale, in che modo Houston ha influenzato il tuo stile e la tua musica?
«Houston influenced me a lot to be original and to never be scared of stepping out of the box. I represent our culture since we have a very distinct and unique culture. When I tell people I am from Houston, they tend to get excited because we have a different type of architecture and set-up. I had different influences outside of Houston. Travis Scott is from Houston but he has a different sound that is influenced by Kanye and Kid Cudi. I grew up listening to Kanye, I grew up listening to JAY-Z, Kendrick, J. Cole. I think that what separates me from the average Houston artist is that my sound is different. When you get to know me though, you get where I come from.»
«Houston mi ha spinto molto ad essere originale e a non avere mai paura a pensare fuori dagli schemi. Rappresento la nostra cultura dato che ne abbiamo una molto distinta ed unica. Quando dico alle persone che vengo da Houston, generalmente vanno in fibrillazione perché abbiamo un modo di fare musica differente. Ho avuto fonti di ispirazione anche al di fuori di Houston. Travis Scott viene da qua, ma ha un sound differente influenzato da Kanye e Kid Cudi. Sono cresciuto ascoltando Kanye, JAY-Z, Kendrick, J. Cole. Penso che ciò che mi distingue dall’artista medio di Houston è che il mio sound è diverso. Però quando mi conosci, capisci da dove vengo.»
I am glad you mentioned JAY-Z who is one of your biggest influences. What’s your favourite project by him?
Sono contento che hai menzionato JAY-Z, che so essere una delle tue fonti di ispirazione maggiori. Qual è il tuo album preferito di Jay?
«That’s hard because I love all his projects but if it had to be one it would be the Black Album. The Blueprint 3 was actually the first cd I bought with my own money when I was a kid.»
«Questa è difficile perché amo tutti i suoi album, ma se dovessi sceglierne uno sarebbe the Black Album. The Blueprint 3 è stato in realtà il primo cd che ho comprato con i miei soldi quando ero un bambino.»
Talking about your path as an artist, you were signed to Master P’s record label and, then, Def Jam welcomed you. How does it feel to be a part of a label that has played a major role in the history of hip-hop? How did they get in touch with you?
Parlando del tuo percorso come artista, eri sotto contratto con l’etichetta di Master P per poi passare alla Def Jam. Come ci si sente ad essere parte di un’etichetta che ha fatto la storia dell’hip-hop? Come sono entrati in contatto con te?
«It feels great. I have big shoes to fill in and it is surreal. Some of my favourite artists have been signed to Def Jam from Run-D.M.C. to JAY-Z to DMX and the list goes on. It is really humbling and exciting and inspiring. I was dropping freestyles on my Instagram page and the Senior Vice-President of A&Rs saw them and he DMed me. Actually, I thought it was spam but he was serious. He flew out to Houston two weeks after our conversation and we started discussing paperwork. I got signed literally off a freestyle and off Instagram.»
«Mi sento alla grande. Trattasi di un’eredità impegnativa. Alcuni dei miei artisti preferiti sono stati sotto contratto con la Def Jam dai Run-D.M.C. a JAY-Z a DMX e la lista è lunga. Ti ridimensiona, ma è eccitante e fonte d’ispirazione. Stavo lanciando freestyle su Instagram e il Senior Vice-President della sezione A&R li ha visti e mi ha scritto. In realtà, pensavo fosse una truffa, ma faceva sul serio. È venuto a Houston due settimane dopo la nostra conversazione e abbiamo iniziato a parlare di scartoffie. Ho ottenuto un contratto proprio grazie ad un freestyle e a Instagram.»
And The Mecca is your first release with Def Jam. Why this title?
E The Mecca è la tua prima uscita con la Def Jam. Come mai questo titolo?
«The Mecca is basically my homage to hip-hop. I am really big on giving flowers to the guys who came before me. I spent a lot of time in New York City working on this project and that is the Mecca of hip-hop.»
«Di base, The Mecca è il mio omaggio all’hip-hop. Sono solito ricononscere il contributo degli artisti che sono venuti prima di me. Ho trascorso un sacco di tempo a New York City mentre lavoravo al disco e questo luogo è la Mecca dell’hip-hop.»
You mention different members of your family throughout the whole album: you thank your mother, you tell us about witnessing the death of your grandmother and you remember your uncle, too. What is the role that your family has played not only in your personal life, but also in your career?
Menzioni vari membri della famiglia nel corso dell’intero album: ringrazi tua madre, ci parli di quando hai visto tua nonna morire e ricordi anche tuo zio. Che ruolo ha giocato la tua famiglia non solo nella tua vita personale, ma anche nella tua carriera?
«A big role! I have major love for my family and I just wanted the world to know a little bit more about me and them and the role they played in my life. My mom was an artist and I watched her doing music in the studio and that is how I got inspired to do music. My grandma was big on music and my uncle, too.»
«Un grande ruolo! Amo molto la mia famiglia e volevo semplicemente che il mondo sapesse un po’ più di me, di loro e del ruolo che hanno giocato nella mia vita. Mia mamma era un’artista ed ero solito guardarla mentre registrava musica nello studio ed è proprio così che ho iniziato a fare musica anche io. Pure la nonna e mio zio era appassionati di musica.»
And what is next after the Mecca? What are you working on?
E dopo The Mecca? A cosa stai lavorando?
«Definitely more music, tours and shows. I got an EP coming out at the top of the year. I am just keeping sharpening my swords.»
«Assolutamente nuova musica, tour e spettacoli. Ho un EP in uscita all’inizio del 2023. Sto continuando a migliorare con costanza.»
What I like about your music is that you sound so transparent and honest about yourself.
Quel che apprezzo della tua musica è che sei trasparente ed onesto rispetto a te stesso.
«It is super important to be raw and vulnerable and let people know these things about yourself because this is how you connect with fans.»
«Penso sia molto importante essere realistici e vulnerabili e lasciare che le persone sappiano certe cose di te perché è così che crei un legame con i fan.»
The Mecca is a dope record also because we can deem it as a body of work, whereas nowadays, in the so-called streaming era, we tend to focus on singles, charts and numbers. Projects like yours remind us that music is wider than a bunch of hits. What is your take on that?
The Mecca è un bel disco anche perché possiamo considerarlo tale a tutti gli effetti, mentre – al giorno d’oggi – nella cosiddetta era dello streaming, tendiamo a focalizzarci su singoli, classifiche e numeri. Progetti come il tuo ci ricordano che la musica è molto più che una manciata di hit. Cosa ne pensi?
«I feel albums like the Mecca that shed light on your personal life are projects people can remember and take something from. They are not focused on making smashes. I have smashes in the vault for a later time but, with this project, I wanted to establish dominance as “You got Kendrick, you got Cole in the last decade but you got Marqus Clae in 2022”. I wanna last.»
«Sento che album come the Mecca che gettano luce sulla tua vita personale siano dischi che la gente può ricordare e prenderne qualcosa. Questi progetti non sono focalizzati sullo sfornare hit. Ho delle hit in serbo per il futuro, ma con the Mecca volevo rendere chiaro che “Ci sono stati Kendrick e Cole negli ultimi decenni, ma hai avuto Marqus Clae nel 2022”. Voglio durare nel tempo.»
