Glowing Mic è il nuovo singolo dei Gang Star con le strumentali di One of the Best Yet
One of the Best Yet è stato l’ennesima dimostrazione, per quanto c’è ne fosse bisogno di dimostrare, dell’immortalità di Guru dei Gang Starr. A quasi un anno di distanza il prolifico Preemo, seconda metà dei Gang Starr, ha deciso di pubblicare la versione strumentale del disco, con un nuovo singolo allegato, Glowing Mic.
Dj Premier riguardo al singolo ha così dichiarato:
“There are two versions of a song called ‘Mr. Gang Starr,’ one version was released right after Guru passed away. The version I had stored away has totally different and unreleased lyrics. As I was constructing the track, I found a scratch from Torae ‘I Destroy The Mic for My Glow’ and it was an instant decision on what to name the track ‘Glowing Mic”
Inoltre, parlando del tipo di suono che ha cercato durante la produzione del beat:
a sound that would bring that traditional style that we are known for to match his lyrics and tone.
Per rimarcare la forza dei Gang Starr
Glowing Mic è l’ennesimo manifesto di quanto i Gang Starr siano un classico e chi scrive non potrebbe essere più d’accordo. Il concept dietro le strofe postume di Guru si potrebbe riassumere nelle seguenti barre, più che esplicite:
“Yet still, I’m one of the greats
Controversial like your favorite emcee debates
I’m classic like a brick comin’ straight out the crate
Fresh out the gate again, time to fill my plate again
It’s mister Gang to the Starr, I’m the latest trend”
Un Guru scatenato che, nell’affermare lo status del proprio gruppo, lo paragona al genio del male Fu Man Chu, personaggio di fantasia che ha l’obiettivo di far cadere la civiltà occidentale con gli stratagemmi più ingegnosi, grazie a una notevole astuzia e a un sofisticato uso delle scienze orientali.
“Mister Gang Starr, I make it do what it do
So true, classic like the fu man chu”
Non ci resta che continuare a spingere Guru ed i Gang Starr pompando Glowing Mic e magari gasarci facendo freestyle – se siete in grado – sulle strumentali di One of the Best Yet.
