Scar Lip – protagonista di questa intervista – è la nuova ospite internazionale di Rapologia. Reduce dal lancio del suo ultimo singolo No Statements, la rapper ha avuto modo di raccontarsi ai microfoni della nostra redazione.
La conversazione – tenutasi qualche settimana fa – ci ha permesso non solo di ascoltare in anteprima l’inedito, ma anche di conversare con l’artista in merito al suo percorso artistico e ai progetti futuri.
Scar Lip si racconta in questa intervista esclusiva per Rapologia
Hi Scar! How are you doing? I had the opportunity to get a preview of your upcoming single No Statements which is fire! What can you tell us about this new tune?
Ciao Scar! Come stai? Ho avuto modo di sentire in anteprima il tuo prossimo singolo No Statements, che è una bomba! Cosa ci puoi dire di questa nuova canzone?
«No statements… just joking! What I can tell you about it is that it is hard, deep, relatable, catchy. But, once again, no statements!»
«Nessuna dichiarazione… sto scherzando! Quel che posso dirti è che spacca, è profondo, ti ci puoi rispecchiare ed è catchy. Però, ancora una volta, nessuna dichiarazione!»
I read an interesting interview you did with Complex where they brought together you, Maiya The Don, Kenzo B and Lola Brooke. The entire conversation was about female unity and the renaissance of the New York rap scene. What is your take on that?
Ho letto una bella intervista con Complex che ha riunito te, Maiya The Don, Kenzo B e Lola Brooke. La discussione riguardava l’unione tra donne e il rinascimento della scena rap newyorkese. Cosa ne pensi?
«This is the year for females and this is also the year for New York City because we got our style back, we got our swagger back. New York is putting on a lot of pressure and a lot of artists from New York are representing heavy, such as Ice Spice and me, of course. We are all going hard right now. We are doing a lot.»
«Questo è l’anno delle donne ed è anche l’anno di New York perché ci siamo ripresi il nostro stile e la nostra spacconeria. New York ci sta dando dentro e diversi artisti come Ice Spice e me – ovviamente, l’hanno riportata in scena. Stiamo spaccando in questo momento e stiamo facendo molto.»
What I appreciate the most about the current scene is that everybody is bringing something different to the table, including you. The problem is that the music industry tends to pigeonhole women in hip-hop as you can be either super lyrical or have a sexier style. How do you plan to avoid the risk of being pigeonholed? How would you like to branch out when it comes to your artistry?
Quel che apprezzo di più dell’attuale scena è che tutti stanno contribuendo in maniera diversa, te compresa. Il problema è che l’industria musicale tende a incasellare voi donne dell’hip-hop perché le persone pensano che voi possiate essere o molto liriche o avere uno stile più sexy. Come pensi di evitare il rischio di essere incasellata? Come vorresti diversificare la tua arte?
«I think I already did it with This Is New York as I brought to the rap game something that was missing and people been wanting for a long time. I feel like I broke out of those categories. I wasn’t the typical female rapper and I was like “F**k you and you and shut the f**k up!” I came with that aggression and they fell in love with it because it was different.»
«Penso di averlo già fatto con This Is New York dato che ho portato nel gioco qualcosa che mancava e che le persone volevano da molto tempo. Sento di essere uscita da quelle categorie. Non sono mai stata la tipica rapper ed ero del tipo “F****o te e pure te, chiudi la bocca!” Sono arrivata con quel tipo di aggressività e se ne sono innamorati perché era diversa.»
Speaking of This Is New York, you were able to get Snoop Dogg on the remix. How did This Is Cali come about?
Parlando di This Is New York, sei riuscita ad avere Snoop Dogg nel remix. Come si è concretizzata This Is Cali?
«Shout out to my man Snoop Dogg. He is such a sweet person! I slid into his DMs asking him to jump on the song. He did the remix and then he brought me out during Hip-Hop 50. He has been supporting me for a long time as a genuin person.»
«Un saluto a Snoop Dogg! Che persona dolce. Gli ho scritto in DM chiedendogli di fare il remix. Lo ha inciso e poi mi ha portato sul palco dell’Hip-Hop 50. Mi supporta con sincerità da molto tempo.»
And in the record there is also an interpolation of DMX’s voice. How did he inspire you?
E nella traccia c’è anche un campionamento della voce di DMX. In che modo ti ha influenzato?
«I said this before. I like when DMX talks his talk. And me, as a 12-year old angry little girl, I told people the same things he told others. I was angry at that time and I wanted to tell somebody “B***h” because he did it, too. So him putting his anger and his pain into his music and me as a person who was like “F**k this whole world” because I had just lost my mom, I was angry at the world and he was just like me. I was like “He gets me. He understands me.”»
«L’ho detto in passato. Mi piace quando DMX dice la sua. Quando ero una dodicenne arrabbiata, dicevo alle persone le stesse cose che diceva lui. All’epoca ero arrabbiata e volevo dire a qualcuno “B***h” perché anche lui lo faceva. Lui metteva la sua rabbia e il suo dolore nella musica ed io ero del tipo “F*****o il mondo” perché avevo appena perso mia mamma ed ero arrabbiata con il mondo e lui era come me. Pensavo “Ci intendiamo. Lui mi capisce.”»
Your team told me that there is an album coming soon. In a recent interview, you said you have pop and rock records in the vault. Is the album showcasing your versatility?
Il tuo team mi ha detto che c’è un album in arrivo. In una recente intervista, hai dichiarato di avere in serbo delle tracce pop e rock. L’album metterà in risalto la tua versatilità?
«The album will, whereas the EP will give you a dash of something. Album and EP are done and I am already working on my second album. And I produced them.»
«L’album sì, mentre l’EP ve ne darà un assaggio. L’album e l’EP sono pronti e sto già lavorando al secondo disco. E li ho prodotti io.»
Whoa! Give me some more detail about that! What is your recording process like?
Grande! Dammi qualche dettaglio in più! Qual è il tuo processo di registrazione?
«It’s fun. I make my music, I write every day and, then, I record. Usually, I get the beats and I murmur the flow. The first thing that comes out is always the flow, I record my murmur and, after removing it, I write the lyrics.»
«Divertente. Creo la mia musica, scrivo ogni giorno e poi registro. Solitamente, ricevo le basi e sussurro il flow. La prima cosa ad arrivare è sempre il flow, registro il mio mormorio e, dopo averlo tolto, scrivo le parole.»
You write, you produce, you create your music from scratch. Was there something paramount when you had to choose the right label for you?
Scrivi, produci, crei la tua musica da zero. Qual è stato l’aspetto fondamentale quando hai dovuto scegliere l’etichetta giusta per te?
«Swizz Beatz helped me get my deal and I trusted him. We walked into a lot of labels, but Epic Records just believed in me and in my talent. The album was done before the deal and they already knew that I got the fire. No Statements will be the first release under their wing, though.»
«Swizz Beatz mi ha aiutato ad ottenere il contratto e gli ho dato fiducia. Abbiamo incontrato diverse etichette, ma la Epic Records ha semplicemente creduto in me e nel mio talento. L’album era pronto prima del contratto e sapevano già allora che avrei spaccato. Però No Statements sarà la prima uscita in collaborazione con loro.»
I believe that there are different level of commitments when it comes to releasing an EP or an album. Did you approach you projects in the same way or did you have different mindsets based on the type of project you were creating?
Penso ci siano diversi livelli di dedizione quando si tratta di rilasciare un EP piuttosto che un album. Hai creato i tuoi progetti allo stesso modo o hai avuto un approccio diverso tarato sul tipo di progetto che stavi incidento?
«I treat every project as my life. The seriousness of everything I do in my career is the same whether it’s a freestyle, an album, an interview, the conversation we are having right now and so on. I treat all seriously.»
«Tratto ogni progetto come la mia vita. La serietà di qualunque cosa io faccia nella mia carriera è la stessa a prescindere che sia un freestyle, un album, un’intervista, la conversazione che stiamo avendo proprio ora e così via. Tratto tutto seriamente.»
What is the legacy you want to leave as an artist?
Quale tipo di legacy vuoi lasciare come artista?
«I wanna show people you can make it being you, being authentically yourself, no gimmicks, no fakeness, just you. I am going to show to the world that I am a young black woman from the Bronx, I’ve been through a lot, I have been in the foster care system. You can see my scars on me but I am going to be successful no matter what I’ve been through. The music will speak for itself.»
«Voglio mostrare alle persone che ce la puoi fare essendo te stesso al 100%, senza imitare altri e senza falsità. Proverò al mondo che sono una giovane ragazza nera del Bronx, ne ho passate tante, ho vissuto il sistema dell’affidamento. Puoi vedere le mie cicatrici su di me, ma avrò successo a prescindere da ciò che ho passato. La musica parlerà da sola.»
To close the chat, what do you want to add?
Per chiudere la conversazione, cosa vuoi aggiungere?
«I want everybody to know me as a normal girl, as a regular person. I am a human being, I want everybody to know I am versatile and show the world all my talents. I want people to know me as I am.»
«Voglio che tutti mi conoscano come una ragazza normale, come una persona normale. Sono un essere umano e voglio che tutti sappiano che sono versatile e mostrare al mondo tutti i miei talenti. Voglio che le persone mi conoscano per quello che sono.»
