Il grande rapper di Buffalo, che ha portato l’underground nel mercato mainstream degli ultimi anni anche grazie a Griselda, ci ha concesso un’intervista breve ma piena di spunti interessanti.
Abbiamo raggiunto Conway The Machine nel backstage dopo il suo concerto all’Ex Macello di Milano in occasione dello Skate and Surf Film Festival. In questa gradevole e stimolante conversazione ci ha parlato del suo rapporto con Italia, della sua carriera con Shady Records e la sua etichetta indipendente, ma anche e soprattutto della sua nuova musica fuori ora e di quella in uscita.

Innanzitutto complimenti per lo show! É stato fantastico ed è un piacere per noi essere qui.
«Il piacere è mio»
Vorrei iniziare chiedendoti di Milano Nights, sia la canzone che il documentario, entrambi fuori ora: cosa ha ispirato il brano e qual è il tuo rapporto con la città di Milano?
«É stato ispirato da una bellissima notte a Milano. Quando ho finalmente potuto avere il mio passaporto e ho potuto viaggiare all’estero, l’Italia è stata uno dei primi Paesi in cui sono venuto e Milano una delle prime città in cui sono stato. Ricordo tantissimi bei momenti di quando sono stato qui. Qui in Italia ci sono persone bellissime, ottimo cibo, una cultura arricchente, è molto storica ed è davvero un bel Paese. Quel brano è uscito fuori da una notte che ho passato qui a Milano, ho detto a me stesso “Le notti a Milano sono folli!”, quindi ho chiamato questa me**a Milano Nights!»
Hai performato questa canzone per la prima volta oggi su questo palco, vero?
«Assolutamente!»
E qual è la differenza tra i concerti in Europa e quelli in America? Se ne hai trovate…
«L’energia, quella è probabilmente la cosa principale. In America non te lo so dire di preciso, sai, in ogni città e Stato c’è un’energia diversa ogni volta, alcune città hanno un pubblico folle e molto partecipativo, l’energia è molto alta. Per qualche ragione in Italia e in tutta Europa l’energia è sempre al massimo ovunque, è incredibile, puoi davvero sentire l’amore di queste persone! L’amore è percepito, questo è probabilmente il modo migliore in cui possa spiegarlo»
Tu sei stato qui a Milano in concerto per la prima volta all’inizio del 2023 per il tour dell’album Won’t He Do It. In realtà in quell’occasione stavate registrando parte del documentario e io sono anche apparso nel video!
«Davvero eri nel video? Che spettacolo (ride ndr)!»
A quei tempi i piani erano di pubblicare un lato A e un lato B per quell’album, poi però hai pubblicato solo il lato A e quello B non è mai uscito, l’hai cancellato e hai optato per l’uscita di Slant Face Killah (SFK), il tuo nuovo album in studio uscito a maggio di quest’anno. Qual è il motivo dietro questo cambio?
«Beh in realtà non è stata una mia decisione. Ho avuto la chiamata dai piani alti. L’etichetta discografica ha detto “Non è poi così una buona idea fare un lato B di quel progetto” per qualunque motivo. Non so perchè l’abbiano detto, ma mi sono fidato delle persone intorno a me e ho detto “non dire altro“: allora ho optato per il titolo Slant Face Killah che, per qualche motivo, era fisso nella mia mente. Quel titolo è arrivato da Beanie Sigel, lui me l’ha consigliato. Ho intitolato l’album così in suo onore»
Poco prima di SFK hai pubblicato il progetto intitolato Palermo. Da dove è nata l’idea di questo disco e di questo titolo ancora una volta affine all’Italia?
«Non mentirò, devo dare ogni merito al mio amico Wun Two. Sai, quella è stata una situazione in cui sono venuti loro da me con l’idea, io ho ascoltato le basi e ho detto “Dai sì, facciamolo!“. Wun Two e le altre persone con cui ho fatto quest’album devono avere tutto il merito per l’idea, loro erano sul sedile del guidatore per quanto riguarda la parte creativa del sound, erano loro a prendere le decisioni. Un saluto a tutte le persone coinvolte nel progetto!»
Ora hai la tua etichetta Drumwork, ma per diversi anni sei stato sotto contratto con la Shady Records di Eminem. Com’è stato questo passaggio?
«Passare da Shady ad essere indipendente… Voglio dire, la parte migliore di tutto questo è quello che ho imparato, tutte le lezioni. Sai, impari e diventi più bravo. Impari non solo a destreggiarti nel business della musica, ma anche a farlo e a essere il capo di un business. Ho avuto l’opportunità di imparare e sono grato per il mio tempo alla Shady Records, sono Shady per tutta la vita! Non potrò mai ringraziare Eminem e Paul Rosenberg abbastanza per aver creduto in me e per averci dato questa possibilità. Quindi voglio ringraziarli, sono grato per tutte le lezioni che ho imparato, grazie a quella esperienza ora so come essere un capo io stesso»
Grande esperienza! Quali sono i tuoi progetti futuri adesso?
«Non posso ancora dirlo con precisione, ma ho due album completi e pronti per la pubblicazione, sono in uscita quest’anno. Assolutamente nel 2024, non so ancora le date precise, ma ci saranno per certo due nuovi album di Conway The Machine nel 2024! Abbiamo anche l’album di Goosebytheway in uscita quest’anno. Stiamo sviluppando Drumwork Exotics, che è il mio brand di cannabis. Drumwork Films, sto scrivendo qualche sceneggiatura e potrei anche recitare un po’»

First of all congrats for the show! It was great and a pleasure for us.
«The pleasure was mine.»
I’d like to start by asking you about Milano Nights, both the song and the documentary out now, what did inspire this song and what’s your relationship with the city of Milan?
«It was inspired by a beautiful night in Milan, you know what I’m sayin’. When I first started to being able to get my passport and travel abroad, Italy was one of the first places I came to and Milan was one of the first cities I arrived to. I just recall so many beautiful moments of my time here. Here in Italy there are beautiful people, great food, an enriching culture, it’s very historic and just a beautiful country. That record came from a night I had in Milan, I said to myself “Man, the nights in Milan are just crazy!”, so I just named that sh*t Milano Nights!»
You performed that song for the first time live today on this stage, didn’t you?
«Absolutely!»
And what’s the difference between the shows in US and the ones in Europe, if any?
«The energy, it would probably be the main thing. In America I can’t really say it, you know, every city and every State have a different energy, some cities are crazy and wild loud, the energy is very high. For some reason in Italy and all over Europe the energy is sky high everywhere, it’s unbelievable, you can just feel the love! The love is felt, that’s probably the best way I could explain it.»
You were here in Milan for the first time at the beginning of 2023 with the tour for the album Won’t He Do It. You guys actually shot part of the documentary for the album and I was in that video, too!
«You were? Oh that’s what’s up (laughs ndr)!»
At that time you said that there would have been a side A and a side B for that album, but then you released side A and changed your plans scrapping side B and changing it into Slant Face Killah (SFK), your new album published in May this year. What’s the reason behind this change?
«Well, that wasn’t my call. That was a call from the higher ups. The record label was like “It ain’t a really a good idea to make a side B of that project.” for whatever reason. I didn’t know why, but I just trusted the people around me and I said “Say less”, then I just went with the Slant Face Killah title that, for some reason, was heavy in my mind at that moment. The title came from Beanie Sigel, he actually gave me that title. It was just to honor him that I named it that.»
Before SFK you came out with the project entitled Palermo, how did you come up with this album and this title about Italy once again?
«I ain’t gon lie, I gotta give all the credit to the homie Wun Two. You know what I’m sayin’, that was a situation that they approached me with, I heard the beats and I was like “Hell yeah, let’s do it!”. Wun Two and all those guys we did this album with, I gotta give them all the credit, they were at the driver seat with the creator sound, they were deciding things. Shoutout to everybody that was involved!»
Now you’ve got your own record label Drumwork, but you’ve been for some years under contract with Eminem’s label Shady Records. What has been this shift like?
«Going from Shady to be indipendent… I mean, the best thing about it is the learning, all the lessons. You know, you learn and you get better. You learn not only how to navigate in the music business, but actually do music business and be the head of some music business. I’ve been able to learn and I’m thankful for my time at Shady Records, in my mind I’m still in Shady Records, I’m Shady for life! I can’t thank Eminem and Paul Rosenberg enough for taking the chance and giving us this opprtunity. So thank you to them, I’m grateful for all the lessons I’ve been able to learn, now I can be a boss myself.»
That’s great! What are your future projects now?
«I can’t really say yet, but I just have two albums completed and ready to go, they are coming out this year. Absolutely in 2024, I don’t know precisely when, but it will be two more albums from Conway The Machine in 2024! We’ve got Goosebytheway album coming out this year as well. We’re doing Drumwork Exotics, that’s my cannabis brand. Drumwork Films, I’m writing some stuff and I might even be doing a little acting.»
