La redazione di Rapologia dà il benvenuto a Tkay Maidza, protagonista di questa intervista. Per chi non avesse già familiarità con lei, la rapper è reduce dal lancio del suo ultimo album Sweet Justice.
Il disco ha segnato un importante passo nel percorso della poliedrica artista classe 1995, che negli ultimi anni aveva condiviso con la fan base una trilogia di EP. Nel corso della nostra chiacchierata, abbiamo avuto modo di parlare di Sweet Justice, del processo creativo e delle sue fonti di ispirazione…buona lettura!

Hi Tkay! How are you? As this is your very first chat with an Italian website, why don’t you tell us something more about your come-up as an artist?
Ciao Tkay! Come stai? Dato che questa è la tua primissima conversazione con un sito italiano, perché non ci racconti qualcosa di più del tuo percorso artistico?
«It’s been a journey through dance music and, finally, learning hip-hop. I wanted to break out of Australia and growing overseas was the most important thing to me.»
«È stato un viaggio attraverso la musica dance e, alla fine, di conoscenza dell’hip-hop. Volevo avere successo al di fuori dell’Australia e crescere oltreoceano era la cosa principale per me.»
Moving to your biggest inspirations, who were the artists you used to look up to the most?
Passando alle tue principali fonti di ispirazione, quali artisti ammiravi di più?
«Definitely Rihanna, Missy Elliott, Busta Rhymes, Outkkast, Nicki Minaj, Lauryn Hill.»

Before we talk about your most recent album, let’s discuss the trilogy of EPs you put out between 2018 and 2021. The production is insane and they introduced you to me!
Prima di passare al tuo album più recente, parliamo della trilogia di EP che hai pubblicato tra 2018 e 2021. La produzione è pazzesca e sono stati il canale attraverso il quale ti ho conosciuto!
«Oh, thank you! I was finally discovering why I liked that type of music. I thought that, if I had followed the plan of this EPs, I could have reached more people and understood where I wanted to go. I just wanted to make cool rap music and cool pop music without paying attention to other people.»
«Oh, grazie! Stavo finalmente scoprendo il motivo per il quale mi piaceva quel tipo di musica. Pensavo che, se avessi seguito il piano degli EP, avrei potuto raggiungere più persone e capire dove volevo andare. Volevo fare bella musica rap e bella musica pop senza prestare attenzione alle altre persone.»
One of the things I appreciate the most about your artistry is that every project you put out is extremely cohesive. However, at the same time you successfully give us tunes that are completely different from each other. How do you manage to achieve this result?
Uno degli aspetti della tua arte che apprezzo maggiormente è che ogni progetto che pubblichi è estremamente coeso. Allo stesso tempo, riesci però a creare canzoni completamente diverse le une dalle altre. Come fai ad ottenere questo risultato?
«To me it’s like telling a story. As the songs go on, you can understand what I am going through. It’s like painting a story! At the same time, you would be able to listen to the songs on their own. I am taking a picture of the moments I am going through in that particular phase.»
«Per me, è come raccontare una storia. A mano a mano che le canzoni progrediscono, puoi comprendere ciò che sto attraversando. Quasi come dipingere una storia! Allo stesso tempo, sei in grado di ascoltare queste canzoni da sole. Scatto istantanee dei momenti che sto attraversando in quella particolare fase.»
After the trilogy, did you feel it was the right moment to put out another album? What’s the meaning behind its beautiful cover?
Dopo la trilogia, sentivi che fosse il momento giusto di pubblicare un altro album? Qual è il senso di questa bellissima cover?
«Yes! I felt people had really embraced those EPs. About the cover, the album is about working harder and developing yourself, just setting the foundation. With this one, I am on a podium but there’s still scaffolding meaning I am under construction. It also looks new and futuristic. It gives you snapshots of my music. Euphoric and psychedelic and you have the sun set.»
«Sì! Sentivo che le persone avevano effettivamente colto il significato degli EP. In merito alla copertina, l’album riguarda il duro lavoro e la crescita personale, nonché la creazione di fondamenta. Qua, sono su un podio, ma ci sono ancora delle impalcature nel senso che sono ancora in costruzione. Sembra altresì nuova e futuristica. Ti restituisce delle istantanee della mia musica. Anche euforica e psichedelica e, così, hai il tramonto.»

To close our conversation, if you had to describe Sweet Justice through three songs, what would you choose?
Per chiudere, se dovessi descrivere Sweet Justice attraverso tre canzoni, quali sarebbero?
«Love and Other Drugs, WUACV, Ring-A-Ling. The first has the sunset feeling I mentioned earlier, it’s very smooth and it gives me the energy I like to get from other people’s music. WUACV is rage and Ring-A-Ling, as well. It could be Out Of Luck, as well.»
«Love and Other Drugs, WUACV, Ring-A-Ling. La prima ha quel senso di tramonto che ho menzionato prima, è molto tranquilla e mi dà la carica che voglio sentire dalle canzoni di altri artisti. WUACV è rabbia così come Ring-A-Ling. Potrei scegliere anche Out of Luck.»
