Congratulations on your success, the new music and the tour! I’d like to start the interview talking about your father, what was his role in your artistry and career? How did he inspire you and what was the “musical relationship” you had with him?

«You know, when my father died I was a little bit young, I was just 14, but even at a young age my father wanted to make sure that me and my brothers and sisters understood what it meant to be around music. Growing up, my father would take us at his shows, take us on tour and those were my first exposures to life as a musician. Watching him perform and being with him on stage at a young age were my initial steps in the world of music.»

You lead the Egypt 80, your father’s former band, so what’s your experience of recording and touring with them like?

«It’s awesome, I couldn’t ask for a better life! We are stronger together, touring with my band is a great experience and I really can’t complain.»

You collaborated with different artists, legends like Santana, rappers and singers. How did all these artists from different fields help you in developing your style?

«Music is one of those things in which, when you make it with other people and share ideas with others, you create that connection. For me it’s always about feeling that connection to other artists while we make music together. For me that’s what it is, the experience is the teacher, to be able to have the chance of working and talking with other artists during the creative process can bring on the best ideas.»

Speaking about your new single, the KuKu Kee Me remix with Black Thought, I’d like to know how did it come to life?

«It was during the pandemic, we have been talking a lot and we have been working on this song even before we did the one together with Common (“When We Move”, ed). I’ve been in touch with Black Thought since 2019 when I met him, since then he has always been a big brother and a mentor to me. Since I met him three years ago, he has always called me to give me some advice, to talk about politics and everything and we’ve always had the idea of working on a project together. A very good friend of mine, Alex James aka DJ Molotov, sent me some beats during the pandemic that really inspired me and I sent them all to Black Thought, that was the beginning of our upcoming project. We’re releasing the first song off our project on September the 23rd, but there are more songs with him!»

Would you like to tell us something more about the upcoming project with Black Thought?

«I can tell you that we’re releasing the first single on September 23rd and the video as well will be out very soon after, I can’t give more insights yet, but it’s an EP and it’s coming very soon!»

Since we deal with hip hop here, I would like to know who are your favourite rappers?

«You see, when I met Black Thought for the first time I told him straight away that he was my favourite rapper, you just have to go back listening to his catalogue to understand it. I also told him that he’s never on somebody’s list of the greatest rappers dead or alive, top 5s ecc… But even regardless of his work with The Roots, with his solo projects Streams Of Thought, he has some of the most lyrical and crazy rhyme patterns and cadences that you could ever think about, he’s truly a genius! When I met him and I told him this, he was like “Yeah, I’m glad you noticed” (laughs, ed), that’s how we became friends. He’s always been a great rapper for me, but not everybody puts him in the conversation even though he knows what rap is about: he doesn’t talk about cars, clothes, hoes, he talks about real shit and tries always to be positive, when you do this kind of things you usually move out of the conversation like you don’t exist. So yeah, I’m working with my favourite rapper ever. He’s truly the best!»

You’re right, he’s really great… What are your plans for the near future?

«I’m on tour right now, we’re in the States now and I’ll be in Europe from the beginning of October.»

You will come to Italy in October for some shows, do you like Italy?

«Oh well, I’ve been to Italy a lot of times and I like it. I went to Italy even this summer in Perugia, Bologna and Catania in Sicily as well to play some shows.»

Do you listen to any Italian artists?

«Well definitely, but actually I can’t think of any right now (laughs, ed). I also have a good friend who lives in Italy and makes music there.»

Ascolti qualche artista italiano?
