Hi Armani! First of all, thank you for this opportunity. Your new project is titled The Liz: what’s the meaning of the title and what’s the concept of the record?

Ciao Armani!

«This is my first debut project since I have been signed to Griselda. When coming up with the title, I knew that everything was going to be super classic and one of the first people that popped into my mind was Liz Taylor, who played Cleopatra. And with West it was more or less like the Elizabeth from wrestling (Editor’s Note: Miss Elizabeth, one of the most famous professional wrestling managers). We kinda merged the two worlds together. We had Isaac Pelayo do the artwork and he did a real life painting of the portrait of Liz Taylor. As soon as I saw it I was like “Yeah, this fits. This embodies exactly what The Liz is”: it’s art but it’s also very much up to interpretation as well.»

During one of your last interviews, you said that you were going to drop an EP first and then your debut album. Is The Liz your debut album, isn’t it?

«It’s not really an album. We called it The Liz Tape because it’s more like an EP. It’s an introduction, just something to feed the people, to quiet the haters and bridge the gap so I can build my own female Griselda base. I did have a project we had started on before the pandemic and that was set to come out right after. I’m going to drop back to back after my brothers drop.»

What are your expectations about your project? What’s your biggest goal as a woman in the music industry?

«The fact that I am the only one doing what I’m doing, looking how I’m looking and rapping over the beats I’m rapping on is solidifying my lane. I have my lane and I am solidifying my sound. This first record was so important because when I first signed people were questioning “Can she rap? Is she just a pretty girl?”. That Lil Cease record shut everybody up because once it came out everybody was like “Oh, she can rap rap”. It kinda gave me the respect. With The Liz, I am hanging in this lane but I still have a couple of songs with a Southern style. I am just merging the two worlds, bringing my original fans into the Griselda world and bringing the Griselda fans into my world.»

How is your recording process like? Are you used to starting from beats or from lyrics?

Com’è il tuo processo creativo? Sei solita partire dalle base o dai testi?

«I always listen to the beat first. Since I have been with Griselda, Westside was trying to feel me out because I was coming from recording more like trap music, Southern style of music. They have their own style which is the boom-bap hard gritty beats and he wanted to see where I would go with that, how I would take that with how I rap now. I always listen to the beat first, I catch a vibe and the first line comes and then after that I know exactly what the song is going to be about.»

You are also known as the first lady of Griselda Records. How does it feel? How is your relationship with the other artists on the roster like?

«I’ve known them pretty much half of my life. When I first started rapping I went into the studio – at that time they were already in a group, at least Benny and Conway – and I was waiting for Shay who was the owner. Benny was writing to another song and I ended up writing a verse to it while I was waiting. Somebody heard me rapping so I rapped for them and then they brought Benny over and he was like “Yeah, she’s nice!” They brought me to Shay and I was in the group. It’s more or less like I’ve known these guys for ten years and we are a family.»

How was your relationship with DJ Shay like? What did he teach you?

«There would be no Armani Caesar if it wasn’t for DJ Shay. He came up with my name, he was influential when I started as far as producing my first two mixtapes and introducing me to the rap game: what beats to go on, how to carry myself, having the confidence to do so especially surrounded by so many other dope lyricists. I was coming up and I was rapping around two of the greatest MCs. He let me know I was the nicest and nobody couldn’t touch me.»

Why did you think that pushing back The Liz was the best decision when DJ Shay passed away?

«It was just a time where there was so much going on. We had just flew back from Cali and we were putting the final touches on The Liz. When DJ Shay passed, everything stopped. We wanted the family to grieve and accept that. Since I’ve got signed, everything has been going so fast as far as me putting together the album, the photoshoots, the videos. You don’t really have a time to grieve but that was just a wake up call: you need to take some time to enjoy your family, celebrate life, grieve a loss. He was responsible for the birth of Armani Caesar so I didn’t feel comfortable dropping that week.»

How was working during a pandemic like? Did COVID-19 change something of your creative process?

«Not so much of the creative process. It just slowed down normal things that artists can experience as far as going to interviews live, going to the radio stations, doing freestyles. As far as the writing process, it was just pretty much the same. Everything kinda shut down so I was at home but I was still working, listening to beats, writing and perfecting my craft but I also wouldn’t tried to leave the house. When I finally did leave, I recorded my album and the features as far as Lil Cease and the one I got with Benny in three days.»

Have you ever been to Italy before?

Sei mai stata in Italia?

«No, I haven’t but I really wanna go. Not being able to perform everywhere was the biggest thing because I have been getting so much love especially overseas. I come from Buffalo, which is a super small town and that meant so much to me. It’s one thing when you have fans in your country, but knowing that people from the other side of the world are rocking with your music it’s a different feeling. I can’t wait to come out and touch my fans and interact.»

«No, ma voglio venirci.

Who would you like to work with?

Con chi ti piacerebbe lavorare?

«So many people! I would like to work with Timbaland. He hit me up right before I got signed just saying he f*cked with everything I had going on. He was super nice and he ended up re-doing one of my songs. I am going to work with him soon. I would like to work with Dre, with Pharrell who’s one of my favourite producers. I already worked with Preemo who was on my bucket list. I would like to work with Jay as well. When I started rapping, I always wanted to be the best rapper, period! I have never wanted to be the best female rapper. I compare myself to guys.»

«Tante persone!

When it comes to your biggest inspirations, who did you look up to when you started rapping?

«I love Jay-Z, he’s just top-tier. If you came from New York, your top five was always Biggie, 2Pac, Nas, Jay-Z and then you had a wild card. The first beat I rapped on was Clipse Grindin beat. After that, it was Dipset, Roc-A-Fella and mixtape Lil Wayne. Weezy was dropping mixtapes consistently: he definitely inspired me to not only be consistent but also to have fun with it.»

You women are really taking over the music industry nowadays. How does it feel to be a part of this second golden age for women in hip-hop?

Di questi tempi, voi donne state sbancando l’industria musicale.

«It feels good. Personally, I haven’t really collaborated with any female artists but I plan to. For female artists coming up and getting their buzz, they always pit you against each other. It’s like a gift and a curse at the same time because the lane is open but then I turn around and my fans are like “Yoh, Cardi ain’t f*ckin with you! Nicki ain’t f*ckin with you!”. I just want it to be how it is with the men. A lot of men work together but you don’t see the same thing with females. I am an Alpha female: you have to be secure in yourself to be able to give another female props and not feel threatened. With me, it’s always love.»

What do you have in store for us after The Liz?

Cos’hai in programma dopo The Liz?

«You know how Griselda drops: ther are very consistent! As far as female artists, they don’t really drop as consistently as that and I think I have an advantage because West keeps us in the studio 24/7. I also have so much music which is unreleased. I was working with Rico Love on something before I started the album. The biggest thing is that I don’t wanna be put in a box. I am very eclectic when it comes to my musical tastes and I like to try different things. We females go through so different emotions and vibes and I want my music to reflect that and reflect growth. If I like singing I’mma do that, if I wanna rap I’mma do that, if I want boom-bap beats I’mma kill them, if I wanna do some trap I’mma do that. We definitely going to do a little bit of both.»
