Con la pubblicazione del nuovo album della leggendaria band hip hop americana dei Cypress Hill, intitolato Back In Black e interamente prodotto da Black Milk, abbiamo avuto l’onore di poter fare due chiacchiere con Eric Bobo, lo storico batterista del trio composto assieme a B-Real e Sen Dog.
Dalla sua casa a Los Angeles, Bobo ha risposto alle nostre domande riguardanti l’album, la band, la collaborazione con Black Milk, la sua pluridecennale carriera e molto altro ancora.
Intervista a Eric Bobo dei Cypress Hill
Good afternoon Mr. Eric Bobo! Congratulations on the new Cypress Hill album Back In Black, out on the 18th March! I would like to start the interview by asking why this title? And how would you describe this project?
«Good afternoon to you! Wow, why Back In Black… I guess it was a play on words: produced by Black Milk and coming back giving a freshness of the Cypress Hill’s sound, its cohesive work and it’s also a cool title (laughs). It’s something we’re really proud of and we were really anxious for the people to hear it. We’ve worked on it for a while, we started it when we were working on Elephants On Acid actually, so finally for it to see the light of the day is great and the sound of it is the freshness, boom bap… You know it’s a rap album, it’s a hip hop album and that’s what you get, beside the mix of genres, as far as going to more heavy rock sounds or anything like that, it’s hip hop and it’s kind of reminiscing how the first album was a straight hip hop album. This album has those elements but it’s fresh and it’s still Cypress Hill!»
Buon pomeriggio Mr. Eric Bobo! Congratulazioni per il nuovo album dei Cypress Hill. Vorrei iniziare chiedendoti perchè questo titolo? E come descriveresti questo progetto?
«Buon pomeriggio a te! Wow, perchè Back In Black… Direi che è stato un gioco di parole: prodotto da Black Milk e tornando indietro (“back”) alla freschezza del sound dei Cypress Hill, per il fatto che sia un lavoro coeso e anche perchè è un titolo figo (ride, ndr). È qualcosa di cui siamo davvero orgogliosi e non vedevamo l’ora che il pubblico lo ascoltasse. Ci abbiamo lavorato per molto tempo, da quando stavamo registrando Elephants On Acid in realtà, quindi il fatto che abbia finalmente visto la luce del giorno è grandioso e il suo sound è fresco, boom bap… sai un album rap, un album hip hop ed è quello che ottieni in mezzo a tutti i mix di generi musicali, passando per le influenze heavy rock e altre cose simili. Alla fine è un album hip hop e ci ricorda molto come il nostro primo album fosse stato un album totalmente hip hop. Questo ha quegli elementi ma è fresco ed è sempre Cypress Hill!»
It is! Here you collaborated with Black Milk for a whole project for the first time, what was like the recording process with him in the studio?
«Yes, it was the first time. It flowed very smoothly to be honest, upon really thinking about what kind of album we would be making, I kind of suggested Black Milk for the production. I’ve been a fan of him since the stuff he did with Sean Price, his own stuff and his work with great producers like J.Dilla, so he made sense, the sound made sense. He is also now living in Los Angeles and, the minute we reached out to him, he was ready, he sent over so many beats and it was fire! You could tell he was hungry, ready to do it his thing, and we were able to tell that. So the recording process was really smooth, B and Sen (B-Real and Sen Dog) were able to record vocals and get them back to him, all back and forth, but it was a very smooth process and it was a pleasure to work with him.»
Lo è! In quest’album avete collaborato con il produttore Black Milk per la prima volta per un intero progetto: com’è stato il processo di registrazione con lui?
«Sì, è stata la prima volta. È andata in maniera molto liscia onestamente, appena abbiamo avuto un’idea del tipo di album che avremmo fatto, io ho suggerito Black Milk per la produzione. Sono un grande fan dei suoi progetti con Sean Price, della sua stessa musica e del suo lavoro con grandi produttori come J.Dilla, quindi aveva senso chiamarlo per produrre il sound che avevamo in mente. Lui vive anche a Los Angeles adesso e, dal momento in cui l’abbiamo raggiunto, lui era pronto, ha iniziato a mandarci tantissime basi ed è stato incredibile! Si vedeva che era pronto per fare ciò che sa fare meglio e non vedeva l’ora. Quindi il processo di registrazione è filato liscio, B e Sen hanno registrato i loro rap e glieli hanno inviati in un continuo avanti e indietro, ma è stato un processo semplicissimo ed è stato un piacere lavorare con lui.»
The featurings are Demrick and Dizzy Wright, they both deliver fire verses, but why did you pick them?
«We have a great relationship with Demrick and B (B-Real) has also worked with Dizzy Wright. Also these collaboration made sense. You know, it would be easy to just get the hot rappers of today, put them on and have them listed on the record, but that doesn’t mean that it would’ve made sense. I think that, with our relationship with all the collaborators, it sonically made sense, musically made sense and we were still able to get the Cypress Hill sound. We also didn’t want to water down the album with a lot of features, after all this time people want to hear Cypress. I think that sprinkling people like Demrick, Dizzy and the other collaborators made sense and that’s were we went with it.»
I featuring sono Demrick e Dizzy Wright, entrambi con grande strofe: perchè avete scelto loro?
«Abbiamo una grande amicizia con Demrick e B-Real aveva già collaborato con Dizzy Wright. Anche queste collaborazioni avevano senso. Sai, sarebbe stato facile prendere i rapper più forti del momento e metterli nel progetto, ma non significa che avrebbe avuto senso. Io penso che, grazie anche alla forte amicizia con tutti i collaboratori, era giusto scegliere loro per avere il sound e la musica che volevamo creare rimanendo fedeli al marchio Cypress Hill. Non volevamo neanche riempire l’album di featuring, dopo tutto questo tempo la gente vuole ascoltare i Cypress Hill. Penso che mettere nel disco persone come Demrick, Dizzy e tutti gli altri collaboratori fosse la cosa più sensata da fare e questa è stata la direzione che abbiamo seguito»
I loved the “Hail Mary” interpolation in the song “Come With Me”, it was genius! Who came up with the idea of sampling 2Pac? I ask it cause I’m a big fan (showing my 2Pac t-shirt)!
«There you go (laughs)! Again Black Milk, he’s a genius and the beat he made lent itself to that. I think that B-Real really caught it and lyrically it’s some of both B-Real and Sen Dog’s best work up to date. Also being in a way a tribute to 2Pac, paying homage. It’s something that hip hop fans from all over the world relate to. I thought that it was brilliant: when I first heard I was like “Wow! This is really gonna blow people’s minds”, because it was not what people were expecting and I think that’s the beauty of it, that we’ve just knocked everybody over their heads with this stuff like “Woah, wait a minute!” and it sounds great. So yeah, I’m glad you liked it!»
Ho adorato l’interpolazione di Hail Mary nella canzone Come With Me, è stata geniale! A chi è venuta l’idea di campionare 2Pac? Lo chiedo anche perchè sono un grande fan!
«Eccolo (ride,ndr)! Di nuovo Black Milk, è un genio e la base che ha creato ci ha guidati verso questa idea. Credo che sia stato B-Real il primo a coglierla e, liricamente, è uno dei migliori lavori sia di B-Real che di Sen Dog. Voleva anche essere in qualche modo un tributo a 2Pac per omaggiarlo. È qualcosa con cui tutti i fan di hip hop intorno al mondo possono identificarsi. Per me il campionamento è stato brillante: quando l’ho ascoltato per la prima volta ho pensato “wow! Questo farà davvero impazzire la gente”, perchè non è quello che le persone si aspettavano e penso che sia proprio questa la bellezza del tutto: abbiamo sorpreso gli ascoltatori che avranno pensato “aspetta un attimo!”. E suonava fantasticamente. Quindi sì, sono contento che ti sia piaciuto!»
It was great! And how did you choose “Open Ya Mind” and “Bye Bye” as the first two singles for the album?
«You know, they’re both strong songs and I think that we needed to let the people know how, from hearing those songs, it would make you want to hear the rest of the record, because they’re both strong songs and I think that was important. Coming off Elephants On Acid people wanted to see what were we gonna do with Black Milk, since Muggs (DJ Muggs: Elephants On Acid’s producer) didn’t really have any involvement in this record, it was important to put out strong songs. This is not to say that they’re the strongest songs on the album but I think they’re good enough to build up the anticipation to say “Wow, wait a minute! We need to go and check out this record because they sound fresh!”. I mean, lyrically and musically it’s all there, so they were good teasers and I think that the idea worked.»
E come avete scelto Open Ya Mind e Bye Bye come primi due singoli dell’album?
«Sai, sono entrambe delle canzoni forti e penso che avessimo bisogno che le persone, ascoltando questi due brani, avessero voglia di ascoltare il resto del disco, perchè sono due canzoni forti e penso sia questa la cosa importante. Provenendo da Elephants On Acid, la gente voleva vedere cosa avremmo fatto con Black Milk, dato che Muggs (DJ Muggs, produttore di Elephants On Acid, ndr) non ha avuto nessun coinvolgimento in questo progetto, perciò è stato importante pubblicare canzoni forti come queste. Con questo non voglio dire che siano le canzoni più forti dell’album ma penso che siano abbastanza buone da creare hype nei fan per fare in modo che pensino “Wow, aspetta! Dobbiamo ascoltare anche il resto perchè il suono è molto moderno!” È tutto lì liricamente e musicalmente, sono state delle ottime anticipazioni e penso che l’idea abbia funzionato»
Cypress Hill’s career is more than 30 years strong and you published in 4 different decades! How has your chemistry evolved during this time?
«I think that we’re bonded, we’re brothers. I think that we still enjoy making music together, we still enjoy being on stage together, no matter if there’s a period of time that we don’t hang out cause we don’t see each other, since now we all have families and we could live and be in different places in the world, when we get together it’s like there was never any separation in time. So I think it’s just evolved into a stronger brotherhood because it’s us, we’re all still after the same goal and the same dream, and to be able to still making music 30 years later together is not easy. There’s a lot of hip hop groups that don’t go pass two albums and they’re not able to carry on a legacy the way that Cypress Hill has. We still enjoy to do what we do, we still enjoy to be up on stage and perform for the fans. The fans know when things are not right by just seeing and hearing and I think that, with this record and with this upcoming tour, people are gonna be able to hear and see the bond and how strong it is.»
La carriera dei Cypress Hill vanta più di 30 anni e avete pubblicato musica in 4 decenni diversi! Come si è evoluta la vostra alchimia nel tempo?
«Siamo legati come se fossimo fratelli, ci piace ancora fare musica e stare sul palco insieme. Può capitare che non ci vediamo per lunghi periodi, perchè adesso ognuna ha la propria famiglia e certe volte viviamo o siamo in parti diverse del mondo, ma quando ci vediamo è come se non ci fossimo mai separati. Quindi credo che la nostra alchimia si sia evoluta nel tempo in una fratellanza ancora più grande perchè siamo noi, abbiamo ancora gli stessi obiettivi e sogni, ed essere ancora capaci di fare musica insieme dopo 30 anni non è facile. Ci sono un sacco di gruppi hip hop che non superano i due album e non sono capaci di portare avanti una grande eredità come abbiamo fatto noi. Noi amiamo ancora fare quello che facciamo, amiamo stare sul palco ad esibirci per i fan. I fan sanno quando c’è qualcosa che non va solamente guardando e ascoltando e io penso che, con quest’album e con il nostro prossimo tour, le persone riusciranno a vedere e sentire il nostro legame e quanto è saldo.»
About your career, what was it like to be both part of Beastie Boys and Cypress Hill?
«It was amazing! Being fan of both, getting the chance to make great music with the Beastie Boys on a few classic records and being able to tour with them and with Cypress Hill has been my job for like 2 years. You know, I would go on tour with one band and then the next week I’m going on tour with the other one… It was a dream because you’re talking about two iconic bands. If you mention hip hop, you can’t go without mentioning Beastie Boys and Cypress Hill, there’s a lot of hip hop groups but those two have been able to stand the test of time and it’s just a blessing to have been able to perform with both.»
Parlando della tua carriera, com’è stato far parte di due grandi band come i Beastie Boys e i Cypress Hill?
«È stato fantastico! Da fan di entrambe le band, sono fiero di aver avuto la possibilità di fare grande musica con i Beastie Boys e andare in tour con loro. Sai, c’è stato un periodo in cui andavo in tour con una band e la settimana dopo andavo in tour con l’altra… È stato un sogno perchè stiamo parlando di due gruppi iconici. Se parli di hip hop non puoi non menzionare i Beastie Boys e i Cypress Hill, ci sono tanti gruppi hip hop ma questi due sono stati davvero capaci di essere ricordati nel tempo ed è stata una benedizione per me essermi esibito con entrambi»
Do you like Italy and Italian artists?
«Italy’s great! We’ve always had great shows out there. We really only get exposed to the artists when we go there because it never comes out stateside, but I’ve done some collaborations with people like Enmicasa, which is an Italian group out there, the flow was great, it’s reminiscing of Spanish. So you can hear the flow and it’s great, I’m not able to understand everything but I understand flow and I think now the production and the level of MCs has grown since when we were first going out there years ago. I’m anxious to hear some of the new artists coming up out there and keeping hip hop alive, cause now, in every country you go to, there are hip hop artists and producers, so I’m really looking forward to hear new stuff… Plus the food is great (laughs)!»
Ti piace l’Italia? Ascolti artisti italiani?
«L’Italia è stupenda! Ogni volta che ci andiamo facciamo degli show fantastici. Abbiamo occasione di entrare in contatto con gli artisti del posto solo quando andiamo lì, ma ho collaborato con alcuni artisti italiani come Enmicasa, che è un gruppo rap italiano: il flow era fantastico, ricordava molto lo spagnolo. Puoi ascoltare il flow ed è fantastico, non sono capace di capire tutto, ma capisco il flow e penso che ora il livello di produttori e MCs sia cresciuto notevolmente da quando siamo stati lì per la prima volta anni fa. Non vedo l’ora di ascoltare nuovi artisti del posto che mantengono vivo l’hip hop, perchè adesso, ovunque tu vada, ci sono sempre artisti e produttori hip hop, quindi non vedo davvero l’ora di ascoltare roba nuova… Tra l’altro il cibo lì è buonissimo (ride, ndr)!»
I totally agree! What’s Cypress Hill’s next move? I’ve seen some US tour dates, are you planning to go to Europe and maybe Italy…?
«Coming up we do have a couple of European dates by the end of the year, but I really think that we’re gonna hit Europe hard next year. I think that once we really get a hold of it with everything about the pandemic, since every country has different protocols, we’ll look forward to do a full-fledged European tour and hit all the countries. So definitely expect something probably next year. You know, things are still being added, we could have a show out there if possible, but things are looking brighter now so expect us to be out there at some point!»
Ultima domanda: quale sarà la prossima mossa dei Cypress Hill? Ho visto alcune date americane, state pianificando anche un tour europeo, magari con qualche data in Italia…?
«Abbiamo già annunciato un paio di date in Europa per quest’anno, ma credo davvero che faremo un grande tour europeo l’anno prossimo. Penso che non appena la situazione della pandemia sarà definitivamente sistemata, dato che ogni Paese ha diversi protocolli, non vedremo l’ora di fare un vero e proprio tour europeo per andare in tutti i Paesi del continente. Quindi aspettatevi certamente qualcosa, probabilmente l’anno prossimo. Sai, stiamo aggiungendo date passo per passo, potremmo avere uno show da quelle parti se possibile, ma sembra che la situazione stia migliorando quindi prima o poi arriveremo anche lì senza dubbio!»
