Good evening man! I’d like to start the interview by talking about Doe Or Die II, your most recent album released in 2021. How did you feel after the highly positive reactions from the audience?

AZ: «Good evening brother! It was great actually, it took few years to put it together until I felt great with it. I was a little nervous since I wondered if my fanbase was still there, so when I put it out and I got the response I got it was great! It gave me the second win and we’re ready for the second album we’re about to release right now, so nothing but love!»

Buonasera AZ!

Why did you choose to make a sequel for your album Do Or Die?

AZ: «I mean, 26 years have passed between the first and the second one. Once its 25th anniversary went by, I was like “Ok, it’s time to show where AZ at now”. So starting from back then when I started my career to now, it just bring everything into a 360. So I decided to do DoeOr Die II and hopefully I’ll do Doe Or Die III sooner than this one, since it took me 26 years from the first one.»

How long did it actually take you to record this album?

AZ: «I have been recording songs for a few years but I’ve never really used them. So when the pandemic hit I really locked in and I came up with 11-12 brand new songs that I really liked and I put it together. It took me about 7-8 months, ‘cause though I have recorded something prior I’ve never really used those records, I’ve probably used just one, but I’m not sure. I’ve been putting out some records in 2013, 2016 and 2018 as warm-ups for Doe Or Die II, but they were just things I threw out to keep my fanbase fed. In 2020 I locked all the way in and finished it in a few months.»

Why did you choose to take such a big hiatus from rap?

AZ: «It’s not that I wanted to, it’s not that anybody wants to. It’s just that sometimes you want to get your business in order and get everything right. Sometimes you want to find the right producers. Sometimes you just want to be in the right frame of mind, so there are a few things that took place and that’s why it took that long. Hopefully it will never happen again.»

Alcune volte devi trovare i produttori giusti.

Why do you think that some old school rappers like you or Lloyd Banks and others made a comeback now? Is it something about the new generation of rap? Why would you think that rap needs you right now?

AZ: «Am I old school (laughs, ed)? We need rap, rap doesn’t need us. Sometimes you could see it like that, but this is the way we vent, release our frustration and expose our creativity. It’s a great thing when artists such as myself come back, because it means that the fire is lit under them again and they still have something to say. The reception you get keeps it burning even more, it was a great thing that I’ve got the reception I’ve got, so I can constantly keep reinventing myself when coming back.»

What are your thoughts on hip-hop now that it is approaching its 50th birthday this year?

AZ: «Man, I love hip-hop, if it wasn’t for hip-hop I wouldn’t be here. It’s beyond just rap, it’s a fashion statement, it’s production, it’s dancing, it’s a whole culture. Hip-hop is everything. I’m glad I played a part in it, because it raised generations and it’s going to raise more generations. I’m glad I’m here, close to its inception I became a part of it. In the 80s, when they started to release music, I was there and I was touring. It gave me the energy to create AZ, who I am now. Hip-hop is beautiful and it saves lives, I love hip-hop!»

Everybody loves it! What’s your top 5 rappers of all time?

AZ: «This is too hard, sometimes I can’t even answer that question, there are too many… Automatically there is Melle Mel, Run from Run DMC, then it comes to mind Big Daddy Kane and Rakim, Slick Rick, KRS-One, LL Cool J, Scarface, Ice Cube, Kool G Rap, it goes on forever… They are all one person to me.»

Do you think that awards like Grammys or others are still, or have ever been, important for rap?

AZ: «They’re not important but it’s part of the game. Like in a lot of things, it’s good to get noticed on certain levels. There’s levels to this sh*t, so awards are on one level, but the streets always know who’s who and what’s what, so it’s cool.»

Do you like Italy? Have you ever been here for shows? What can fans expect from a live set of yours right now?

AZ: «We did perform in Italy, we performed in Rome and other cities out here. It’s nothing but love and we’re going to give them the old, the new, the unheard, you’ll get everything from me. I’ll bring everything to the table, if you’re an AZ fan you’ll surely appreciate it.»

Ti piace l’Italia? Sei mai stato qui per qualche concerto? Cosa possono aspettarsi i fan da un tuo show?

AZ: «Ci siamo già esibiti in Italia, siamo stati a Roma e in altre città.

Have you ever listened to any Italian artist?

AZ: «There was an Italian artist, this guy right here (checks on the phone ndr)… Someone send him to me… Mondo Marcio, he’s good.»

Is your next solo album, that you’ve just mentioned, your nearest future project?

AZ: «Yes, it’ll be out in August hopefully.»

Is there ever going to be a reunion of The Firm?

AZ: «Not sure, but the door is open, if it happens it happens. It would be a good look. It won’t happen on this album, but it can happen.»

It happened on Nas’ King’s Disease album and it kept the hopes very high.

AZ: «Yeah, facts. That’s Dj Doo Wop (AZ’s DJ, ed)’s favourite song right there, Full Circle. He plays it everywhere, he listens to it taking showers, he loves it. It’s his favourite song (laughs ndr).»

Man, the interview is over. It was a honor for me, thank you!

AZ: «Thank you man, good interview!»

L’intervista è finita. E’ stato un onore per me, grazie!

AZ: «Grazie a te amico, bella intervista!»
