Qualche settimana fa, abbiamo avuto il piacere di scambiare due parole con i Planet Giza, trio proveniente dal Canada. Il risultato è l’intervista che segue, durante la quale abbiamo parlato di Don’t Throw Rocks At The Moon, dei loro programmi futuri e di molto altro… buona lettura!
Hi guys! First off, thank you for this opportunity. What does the italian public need to know about Planet Giza?
Ciao ragazzi! Anzitutto, grazie per l’opportunità. Cosa deve sapere dei Planet Giza il pubblico italiano?
«We are three guys from Montreal and we make dope music. We are pretty introvert (Rami). The italian public needs to know that, as soon as we can, we are going to Italy (Tony).»
«Siamo tre ragazzi di Montreal che fanno bella musica. Siamo abbastanza introversi (Rami). Il pubblico italiano deve sapere che, non appena ne saremo in grado, verremo in Italia (Tony).»
You are among the most eclectic artists of the contemporary scene because your music blends together different genres. Who are your biggest inspirations and how much music do you guys listen to everyday?
Siete tra gli artisti più eclettici della scena contemporanea perché la vostra musica mischia generi differenti. Quali sono le vostre fonti di ispirazione e quanta musica ascoltate ogni giorno?
«In these times non that much. Personally I don’t listen to that much music. Mostly old stuff because I am trying to discover new stuff from the past. But as far as inspirations, for me it’s Pete Rock, Marvin Gaye, Quincy Jones, Just Blaze, the Neptunes, Madlib (Rami). On this side, it’s the same thing because as of now I don’t listen to a lot of music. I might go through some old school songs and, as far as inspirations, the same as Rami’s like D’Angelo, Jay-Z. (Tony). For me, my inspiration mostly comes from Southern Hip-Hop like Gucci Mane, T.I., UGK, Outkast, Three 6 Mafia (Doomx).»
«Di questi tempi, non tanta. Per quanto mi riguarda non ascolto tanta musica. Per lo più vecchie canzoni perché cerco di trovare materiale nuovo nel passato. In merito alle mie fonti d’ispirazione, Pete Rock, Marvin Gaye, Quincy Jones, Just Blaze, the Neptunes, Madlib (Rami). Nemmeno io ascolto molto musica. Può darsi che dia un ascolto a canzoni old school e le mie ispirazioni sono quelle di Rami come anche D’Angelo e Jay-Z (Tony). Per me, la mia ispirazione viene soprattutto dal Southern Hip-Hop come Gucci Mane, T.I., UGK, Outkast, Three 6 Mafia (Doomx).»
Last year, you launched Mellow Mellow Radio that is not only a way to get in touch with your fans but also a way to tease new music. How did you guys come up with the idea of creating a radio?
L’anno scorso avete lanciato la Mellow Mellow Radio, che è non solo un modo di entrare in contatto con i fan, ma anche un modo per anticipare nuova musica. Come vi è venuta l’idea di creare una radio?
«Actually, our manager came up with the idea. We tried the first time and we had fun doing it so we were like “Let’s keep going!” (Rami). It’s like a conversation with friends and we have a bunch of unreleased music. We were like “let’s get a reception from the fans and see what they think about that!” (Tony).»
«In realtà, è stato il nostro manager ad avere l’idea. La prima volta ci abbiamo provato e ci siamo divertiti, così abbiamo pensato “Continuiamo a farlo!” (Rami). È come una conversazione con degli amici e abbiamo un po’ di musica inedita. Abbiamo pensato “vediamo come reagiscono i fan e cosa ne pensano!” (Tony).»
Let’s talk about your last musical effort, Don’t Throw Rocks At The Moon. The title of the EP could have different meanings and I’d like to know something more about the recording process and the real meaning of the title.
Parliamo del vostro ultimo sforzo discografico, Don’t Throw Rocks At The Moon. Il titolo dell’EP potrebbe avere significati differenti e mi piacerebbe sapere qualcosa di più sulla sua registrazione e sul vero significato del titolo.
«We were recording a whole different project before the pandemic hit and, once it started, it kinda shifted our focus. We made the beats in three days and we recorded the songs in three days and we came up with the project Don’t Throw Rocks At The Moon. As far as the process, it was intense but we were locked in and focused. As far as the title, we play on the catch phrase “don’t throw rocks at the sun” and then it was also Icarus, which is the first song on the project, the person who flew close to the sun. We flipped it and we said Don’t Throw Rocks At The Moon because the whole vibe of the EP was dark. Essentially, it is like don’t throw rocks at the nightime, don’t try to go against it because, at the end of the day, the sun comes up – “and the sun came up” is what When The Moving Stops says. (Tony).»
«Stavamo registrando un progetto differente quando è iniziata la pandemia e, una volta che è iniziata, la nostra attenzione si è spostata. Abbiamo creato le basi in tre giorni, abbiamo registrato le canzoni in tre giorni e siamo arrivati a Don’t Throw Rocks At The Moon. In merito al processo creativo, è stato intenso, ma eravamo chiusi nello studio e concentrati. In merito al titolo, giochiamo sul modo di dire “non lanciare pietre al sole” ed anche su Icarus, che è la prima canzone del progetto, l’uomo che volò vicino al sole. L’abbiamo invertito e reso con Don’t Throw Rocks At The Moon perché il vibe dell’EP è dark. Sostanzialmente, non lanciare pietre alla notte, non tentare di andare contro i momenti bui perché, alla fine, il sole sorgerà – “and the sun came up” è quel che When The Moving Stops dice (Tony).»
You mentioned success and I’d like to know what success is for you guys because, nowadays, when we think about it we think about streaming numbers, record sales, platinum plaques and stuff like that. What’s your take on it?
Avete parlato di successo e vorrei sapere cos’è il successo per voi perché, al giorno d’oggi, quando ci pensiamo pensiamo ai numeri nello streaming, record di vendite, dischi di platino e cose del genere. Cosa ne pensate?
«Success is just being able to live off our music. We don’t really care about the cameras, the fame and stuff like that (Rami). Once we get to live off what we love, that’s success (Tony). We like to stay in the back and just do our thing, we are pretty reserved and, as long as we live off the music, that’s success to us (Doomx).»
«Avere successo significa semplicemente vivere grazie alla nostra musica. Non ci interessano veramente le telecamere, la fama e cose del genere (Rami). Una volta che riusciamo a vivere di quel che amiamo, questo è successo (Tony). Ci piace stare dietro le quinte e lavorare sodo, siamo abbastanza riservati e, finché viviamo grazie alla musica, questo è il successo per noi (Doomx).»
In my opinion, this is an attitude that we need in the contemporary music industry because, in this streaming era, we are too much focused on hits and numbers. Indeed, the artists are giving us projects that are more “collections of songs” than real albums. There’s a responsability for the labels, but also for the artists themselves. What do you think?
Penso che questo sia l’atteggiamento di cui abbiamo bisogno nell’industria musicale contemporanea perché, nell’era dello streaming, siamo troppo presi da hit e numeri. Infatti, gli artisti rilasciano progetti che assomigliano di più a “raccolte di singoli” piuttosto che a veri album. La responsabilità è delle etichette, ma anche per gli artisti stessi. Cosa ne pensate?
«The good thing is that, right now, making music is very accessible for everyone and, if it wasn’t for that, we wouldn’t make music. The bad thing is that everybody can make music now. There are too much people in the game that don’t do it for the right reason (Rami). They don’t really do it for the money, but just to be famous, just to get some type of attention. There will always be a gap between people like Drake and Kendrick and the people that came after because those people make music out of passion and that’s something you can feel (Doomx).»
«La cosa bella è che, al giorno d’oggi, fare musica è accessibile per tutti e, se non fosse per questo, noi non faremmo musica. La cosa negativa è che chiunque può fare musica al giorno d’oggi. Ci sono troppe persone nel rap game che non la fanno per la giusta ragione (Rami). Non lo fanno veramente per i soldi, ma soltanto per essere famosi, per avere qualche tipo di attenzione. Ci sarà sempre un gap tra persone come Drake e Kendrick e le persone arrivate dopo perché quelle fanno musica per passione ed è qualcosa che puoi sentire (Doomx).»
What do you have in store for us in the next following months?
Cosa avete in serbo per noi prossimamente?
«We are releasing music in the summer, maybe another project. DTRATM was just a test to show people what we can really do. People thought that the only thing we could make was what we did with Added Sugar, dancy stuff. We just wanted to show people and ourselves that we could make any type of music (Doomx). We are also working, potentially, on some shows, some merch (Tony).»
«Lanceremo della musica questa estate, probabilmente un altro progetto. DTRATM era solo una prova per mostrare alle persone cosa siamo veramente in grado di fare. Le persone pensavano che l’unica cosa che potessimo fare fosse quanto fatto con Added Sugar, materiale dance. Volevamo semplicemente mostrare alle persone e a noi stessi che potevamo fare qualunque tipo di musica (Doomx). Stiamo lavorando anche a qualche spettacolo e a un po’ di merchandise (Tony).»
The last topic I’d like to discuss with you is what the afroamerican community went through last year. I think that music could have an important role in this particular time. Do you agree?
L’ultimo argomento che mi piacerebbe discutere con voi è quanto vissuto dalla comunità afroamericana lo scorso anno. Penso che la musica possa avere un ruolo importante in questa situazione particolare. Siete d’accordo?
«Music heals, motivates, helps you go through hard times and that’s what we tried to provide. Music is the soundtrack to your life and it’s about uplifting brothers and sisters (Tony).»
«La musica guarisce, dà una motivazione, ti aiuta ad affrontare i brutti momenti e questo è quanto abbiamo cercato di dare con la nostra. La musica è la colonna sonora della tua vita ed ha a che fare con il risollevare i fratelli e le sorelle (Tony).»
