Good evening Macy, congratulations on the great show! Since I write for a rap website and I know that you’ve collaborated with many rappers such as Common, Black Eyed Peas ecc…, I’d like to know what’s your relationship with this genre and who are your favorite rappers?

Macy: «Oh you know, I was lucky enough to be probably in the 5th grade when I heard the first rap song ever made, Rapper’s Delight. So I grew up watching the genre really taking off and that was cool to watch… You know, rap teaches everybody a lot, like people say that lyrics don’t matter, but when you listen to rap music everybody knows the lyrics, so it kind of cancels out everybody’s theory of what works and what doesn’t. You know, everybody has their little formulas and then rapper comes in and just cancels it all, that’s why I like it. My favorite artist is probably… Biggie! He’s my number one! I know it’s so common… He actually taught me rythm, I know people like his words and stuff but he was like a metronome, like a machine, he never missed a beat, he lands on it everytime like a drummer. I learned that from him, before knowing his music I knew how to do it unconsciously but I didn’t know what I was doing. I could go on and on, but he’s definitely my favorite… Who’s your favorite (referring to the keybord player Billy, ed)?»

Billy: «Biggie (they laugh, ed)! I think his flow is crazy, so I definitely have to agree with Biggie… And I would also add JAY-Z

Biggie! Lui è il mio numero uno! So che è molto comune…

Billy: «Biggie (ridono ndr)!

Back in he day you wrote and performed one of my favorite songs of yours called “Time Of My Life” for the 8 Mile soundtrack, what was the recording process behind it and how did that song come to life?

«Well, it was really hard because it came to me that Eminem wanted me to write a song for his movie, so he asked me to do it. Then they sent me the movie, I watched it a bunch of times and that’s what I got out of it. Eminem played this kid trying to figure out everything about his life like many people, but then he meets this girl and at least he can say he has that. You can totally mess up your life but at least you have those moments with that person that you’ll never forget, so that’s kind of what it was about. The title “Time Of My Life” says that, no matter what happens in your life, if you kill 25 people or you die of herpes (laughs, ed), you still have that one time with that person that sticks and makes everything okay.»

How did you feel back in the day after the success of your first hit I Try?

«Well, it’s good to still have a song that everybody knows and sings everywhere I go, it lights me up!»

It’s a classic!

«Oh thank you!»

«Oh grazie!»

What’s the experience of working, recording and touring with the new band California Jet Club like?

Macy: «Well it actually taught me a lot. We’ve talked about being a band for a while but we didn’t because we were all busy with stuff, but then Covid came along and the only thing that we could do was going into a studio to make an album. So we did it and I was very surprised, I was really blown away by the stuff that came out of it. They made me want to be a better artist and made me want to sing better and write better. I started out in bands when I was like 4 years in my career and I realized how much I missed that, you know. What do you think of it (referring to Billy, ed)?»

Billy: «It’s awesome! It’s still a dream, still surreal and unreal just to have written with you (referring to Macy, ed), with the legend that you are. Nobody can tell me nothing, if the world ends right now I can say I made something that was worth it.»

Macy: «He’s a man now (they laugh, ed)»

Do you like Italy? Do you listen to any Italian artists?

«See here’s where you embarass me because I haven’t heard of a new Italian artist in a while, it sucks being American because in Europe you have every kind of music, but in America we might hear just some British songs at most here and there like the ones by Harry Styles, other than that it’s just very thin. I tell everybody that when you come to Europe and go to a record store there’s a whole section of albums by artists of any nationality, which in the States is hard to get, we have very small selection. I wish i could blow you away with all my knowledge of Italian music but I can’t (laughs ndr).»

Ti piace l’Italia? Ascolti artisti italiani?

What are your future projects?

«We’re actually on the last day of making a Christmas album that should be out by November 1st and then our new studio album comes out on Valentine’s Day 2023 with the first single Every Night coming out very soon, then we have a song with Big Freeda and I think you’re going to love it! Then we’re doing a TV show, me and the band are making a documentary right now while on tour… And then there’s life, you know I’ve got kids so my whole days are booked (laughs, ed).»

Thank you so much for your time, it was a honor!

«Thank you!»

«Grazie a te!»
