James BKS si racconta per Rapologia – Intervista

James BKS

Intervista a James BKS

Welcome to Italy, we can’t wait to finally enjoy your concert! We would like to start the interview talking about your father Manu Dibango, a great jazz musician: what was his influence on your career? Did he ever give you some tips or suggestions for it?

«Sure, first of all thank you for having me… You know, being able to reconnect with my biological father was a big thing for me because, through him, I was able to reconnect with my roots as well after 30 years that I spent in France and US, so I did not really know the culture of Camerun where both my mother and father were born. He gave me a lot of that through his music. Fortunately for me I was already living out of what I was doing musically so, when we met and we immediately started to vibe and connect through music, it was mutual fun. Obviously I learned a lot from him because he is a legend who saw everything and worked with everybody. I knew that through what he was teaching me I was able to get something for me, I would have infused what I learned with him into my music. What I learned with him during those 7 years was to be able to keep practising and working on my music, no matter where you think you are in life because there’s always something left to learn and you have to be able to reinvent yourself all the time. Being able to see him performing, practising and always giving his best made me understand the importance of being humble in what I’m doing.»

You’ve also collaborated with many legends such as Snoop Dogg, Akon, Diddy ecc… Your hit single New Breed has got great artists on it like Q-Tip, Little Simz and Idris Elba! What was the recording process behind it like? How did you feel when you had completed that track with all those legends on it?

It was a true blessing to me to be able to share the track with those kinds of people, Q-Tip is a legend and someone I look up to. Kanye West is my all time favourite producer, but he is directly coming from what Q-Tip used to do, so having him on the song was a big thing to me. How it happened: at that time I had just released my first record called Kwele and Idris (Elba) loved that record, so he was like “Yo, we could get Q-Tip on the remix!” and when Q-Tip heard the record he loved it but it took a lot of time for him to actually get on the remix. So by that time I had to switch to another single and I was really disappointed obviously, but Idris was like “You know, try to make something new and we’ll see if he likes it, he may be dropping a verse, we never know”. I worked on that record New Breed, sent it to Idris, he loved it and was like “Hold on, let me get my verse on it first (he laughs) and then we’ll send it to Q-Tip” and that’s what he did. Q-Tip loved it and, as a matter of fact, that was one of the only two songs that he did in 2019 that were out, so that was really a big thing for me. Obviously also what Little Simz brought to the table was amazing and I’m truly proud about that record!»

Top 5 producers? And influences in general?

«I would say that my all time favourite producer is actually Quincy Jones, I was fortunate enough to meet him like three years ago. So I would say him, I would say Kanye West, I would say Manu Dibango and there’s a lot of people after that… The ones who work with Kendrick Lamar, I love his catalogue and I love what he’s been bringing to the table, he’s always reinventing himself and all his producers’ team as well, who else next… I’d probably say John Mayer, I love his style of music as well, he’s someone that I really like to listen to.»

Top 5 producers?

Your first big live was in 2019, why did it take so long? And are you more a studio artist or a live one?

«The thing is I’ve never seen myself performing on a stage in front of an audience, I’ve been a producer for a long time and I was always behind the scenes and, being around great musicians and great performers, I’ve never seen myself as a musician on stage, let alone being able to actually take the mic and perform. I was fortunate enough to have a lot of good-hearted and great people around me that really push me to my limits and make me believe in myself. You know, the people that I’m working with as of today, my group, is truly a family because they gave me confidence and they were like “You can make it, this is for you!”, as well as Cecilia who’s been working with me for the past 12 years since we also have a production label together. They really pushed me to the limits and that’s why today I’m actually able to be here in Milano performing in front of an Italian audience, it’s truly a blessing for me. I take things step by step, in 2019 was my beginning and I’m growing slowly but surely.»

What can the audience expect from a live of yours?

«Wow… A true comedian, I don’t know if we can say that but… Yeah I am with great musicians with great energy sharing my story!»

What are your future projects?

«I’m working on an album that’s about to get released very very soon, I don’t know the exact date but it’s coming really soon and it’s called Wolves Of Africa! I have one new single that’s about to come out in the beginning of January that’s called Panangia. I’m really looking forward to this record because that song symbolizes a dope project to me, the story is very deep and it’s kind of me paying homage to my father and me being able to find myself through that process.»

What do you think about Italian music?

«I had the chance to listen to Ghali not too long ago. I have a very good friend of mine whose parents are from Napoli and he hooked me up to La Hasna, love her music… Johnny Marsiglia is very good too, I’m getting to the Italian music scene more and more and I like it.»
