GRIP rapper Shady Records eminem

Congratulations on the new project! We would like to introduce you to our audience so let’s start with the most classic of questions: how did your story with Rap start?

«I discovered Rap very early, I was a kid, my older sister was listening to DMX, Jay-Z, OutKast, Nas, Pac and many others…I was surrounded by all this music. I remember the curiosity, looking through not only the music but also the booklets, the CD and everything that was the project itself. I started writing rhymes in middle school, and I started recording through high school. I had a small home studio and that’s how my adventure with Rap began.»

As I listened to most of your releases so far, I was wondering how you imagine your rhymes. Do they come before the beat or do you get inspired by the instrumental and then you start writing?

«It depends. Sometimes I write wherever I am, I think about bars in my head without music; other times, listening to a beat first helps me to imagine a certain type of cadence, flow … I would say that I find myself writing in two different ways, with and without a beat.»

I’ve noticed that your sonic and cultural influences come from different places. If you had to choose three albums, regardless of their genre, that in your opinion define your soul musically speaking, what would they be?

«Mmm ok, gosh, tough question, I’ve never been asked that. I would say ATLiens by OutKast; I love It Was Written but I’m not sure I would add it in this context, Nevermind by Nirvana and lastly, It’s Dark and Hell is Hot by DMX. These are three albums that I never stop listening to, I often go back and study them from start to finish.»

I recently witnessed a conversation between you and my favorite MC, Royce Da 5’9″. How does it feel to have such OGs around? Even if it’s only to be able to have conversations about the scene, the industry and more. What do you think is the best piece of advice you’ve heard from them?

«Shout out to Royce, he’s a very direct person, he tells it like it is regardless of the topic or the person he’s in front of. I would say one of the things that impressed me the most is his ability to communicate that in the end we are all human; his perspective and concreteness is fascinating. At the end of the day, we’re all just normal individuals, we just rap well, so it’s a kind of reasoning that brings you down to earth. Royce told me many times that no matter how much we achieve in Hip-Hop, we must never forget that in the end, it’s always us, simple people with the same problems as anyone. Straight to the point.»

Speaking of which, I’d say you picked the right label, considering Eminem is one of the most humble artists in the scene….

«Yeah, definitely.»

About the contract with Shady Records, how did it go? Did you try to contact them or did they find you?

«Regarding the labels, it’s not like it used to be, they have to find you if you’re lucky, you can’t reach them anymore in any way. Eminem listened to my Snubnose project and was impressed. From there, he and his team contacted me and we have been in touch for almost a year during the pandemic.»

First album under Shady Records is “I Die For This!?”. Was it recorded before or after the deal?

«Most of the project was complete before we were even in contact with Shady Records, we’re talking about a good 95%. During our conversations with Em and the team, I continued to record (Halo EP) and when I had the chance to meet him in person I played for him I Die For This!? as it was and he loved it.»

Il primo album sotto Shady Records è “I Die For This!?”

And you got that Eminem feature on lock, right? eheh

«Yeah that too ahah»

Eheh

«Si anche quello ahah»

Besides Em, now that you’re part of Shady, I bet the opportunities to work with famous producers and artists have tripled? Seeing and listening to your story, considering your origins, I would say that you want a song with André 3000 ahah

«Yes, one with André 3000, one with JAY Z and others…but yes André is on top of the list.»

When it comes to rappers from Atlanta, people tend to think solely of the melodies, the bangers and the Trap part. On the contrary, you have all this and much more. I remember that the first song that I have heard of GRIP was 911 (Clap For Em), thanks to the TV Show Euphoria.

«Yes, creating a song solely for that show was a fantastic opportunity.»

Talking about lyrics, you already have two concept albums, which is exceptional because you have the rare ability nowadays to create albums and not only songs. What is the thought process behind these projects? Does the idea come first or does it develop after the studio sessions?

«The first thing I do is try to figure out how I want it to sound, imagining it as if it were colors. Then, I think about a theme and a subject, trying to make it all fit together. After that, I always start with how I want it to sound in the first place. I think about the sounds as if I were a director or a screenwriter, I think “what kind of movie do I want to make? A dark movie? Something more positive?” That kind of process invests me prior than the recording of the project itself.»

I’d say the streaming game is not the priority for you, is it?

«Nah…I know what kind of songs might get more streams, but it’s not necessarily the focus for me. Giving something that can excite my fans, something they can relate to, something they can listen to while they’re in the car…while they’re fucking, while they’re partying, that covers every mood. I would say that’s my focus: being able to make music that can accompany my listeners in all the feelings and situations of the day. All of this, to get back to what we were saying earlier, while keeping the project cohesive and consistent with itself and never let it leave the element I have associated it with.»

Talking about the new album “I Die For This!?”, what is the concept behind it?

«The album is about duality, the sacrifices you make to try to get to this place I’m in right now, reflecting on the doubts that make me wonder if what I’ve achieved is worth as much as what I’ve lost along the way. The duality of my life, the duality of GRIP, the highs and lows.»

Parlando del nuovo album “I Die For This!?” qual è il concept dietro quest’ultimo?

Beyond Eminem’s releases, do you have a favorite moment or record related to Shady Records?

«When 50 Cent came out with Get Rich or Dyin Tryin’. I remember that shit, I went to buy the record at Target, 50 was all over the place. That motherfucker gave us something like 6 singles off that project. It was a moment, a crazy moment, bro.»

«Quando 50 Cent uscì con Get Rich or Dyin Tryin’.

One last question, we would like your music to reach as many people as possible in Italy as well. Is there something you would like to say to our readers?

«With I Die For This? and also with my two previous albums “Porch” and “Snubnose” I always wanted to express that I care about my people, to say that we could do better…but at the same time I realize that I’m also a product of the environment I grew up in. I’m not and I don’t pretend to be a saint or a preacher. I just want to give a pure and uncompromising perspective; representing where I come from, what drives those like us to do certain things and how we feel internally as human beings.  This latest project with Shady Records is the most personal one, a bit more direct to me and my life and my person. As I said before, the goal is to make those who listen to me understand the the vulnerability that there is in each of us, show my human side so as to try to make the others more confident in themselves. I hope that my music helps connect people and at the same time connect WITH people.»

Thank you so much, GRIP, we need this.

«Thank you, I appreciate that! Much love!»

«Grazie a voi, Apprezzo tantissimo! Much love!»
